In this course, you will explore the importance of sustainability in the design industry and learn how to integrate environmentally friendly practices into your interior design work. You will develop an understanding of ethical supply chain management, responsible material selection, and sustainable design principles to minimise environmental impact and maximise social benefits.

Additionally, you will gain insights into broader industry standards and their influence on your practice, equipping you with the knowledge to make a positive impact as an interior designer.

  • Abbie Freestone, Director of Climate and ESG at Rewild Agency. Abbie advises organisations on sustainability measurement, strategy, communication, and education. Specialising in carbon accounting, climate risk, and net-zero strategy, she works with clients in various industries, including the built environment, hospitality, tourism, agriculture, and education. Abbie is dedicated to equipping organisations with the knowledge and tools to measure and reduce their environmental footprint while amplifying their social impact.
  • Cushla McFadden, Director at Tom Mark Henry. Cushla McFadden is co-founder and director of Tom Mark Henry – a leading Australian award-winning interior design studio based in Sydney and Brisbane – with a philosophy driven by connections and inspired by authenticity. She aims to champion an authentic and inspired culture and boutique service at Tom Mark Henry, ensuring the team always adopts industry-leading, innovative, sustainable, and inspiring solutions that create lasting social and environmental impacts.
  • David Ritter, Director of Atelier Ten. David is the leader of Atelier Ten’s Melbourne studio, a strategic sustainability consultancy specialising in environmental design, ESD consulting, and transforming the built environment. With expertise in strategic consulting, environmental design optimisation, and net-zero carbon strategies, David has worked with government and corporate clients on large-scale projects worldwide. He is an accomplished environmental engineer and teaches at the University of Melbourne.
  • Nick Garnham, Director at Jardan. Nick has been Jardan’s Director for over 25 years. After honing his skills as a designer and gaining invaluable experience from working with large retailers and architectural firms, Nick’s insight into the needs and opportunities within the manufacturing and design community helped him shape Jardan’s tangible and unique proposition. With a deep connection to the Australian way of life, Jardan creates inspiring and responsible furniture and lighting with a curated collection of homewares.
  • Frances Atkins, Founder of Givvable. Frances is the director of Givvable, an AI platform that enables companies and governments to screen supplier sustainability and ESG automatically. She also serves as a senior advisor to the Monash Centre for Financial Studies, contributing to sustainable and ESG supply chain practices research. With a passion for social innovation, Frances has served on multiple non-profit boards and has earned recognition for her work, including the UNSW Founder of the Year award in 2022 and the UNSW Alumni of the Year award in 2023 for innovation and entrepreneurship.

Upon completing this course, you’ll be able to:

  • Implement responsible material sourcing strategies to minimise environmental harm in your design projects.
  • Identify and collaborate with ethical suppliers who prioritise sustainability and social responsibility.
  • Apply environmentally sustainable design principles to create functional and aesthetically pleasing interiors.
  • Develop a regenerative mindset that considers the long-term ecological consequences of your design decisions.
  • Incorporate inclusive and accessible design practices that cater to the diverse needs of people.

How long will this course take me?

  • This course will take 10 hours to complete, including videos, written materials, activities, and study time. 
  • Most of our students dedicate 1-2 hours per week to study around work and other commitments. You will have a full 12 months of access from the date of enrolment.
