Course Overview

This short course will teach you the ins and outs of animal care, a rewarding and challenging field. Created in collaboration with Australia’s leading animal care experts from RSCPA Queensland, you’ll dive into the industry’s ‘here and now’ and gain plenty of inspiration for your future career.

What does this course teach me?

Upon completing this course, you’ll have a better understanding of:

Safe and effective animal handling techniques.
The importance of proper animal nutrition and health care.
Animal behaviour and the benefits of environmental enrichment.
How to provide rescue and first aid care in emergencies.
The role of veterinary care in maintaining animal well-being.
The daily operations of a veterinary clinic and how to support them.
How to offer compassionate support to pet owners experiencing loss.
The significance of animal welfare and sustainability in the animal care industry.

How long will this course take me?

This course will take you roughly 30-40 hours to complete. This includes videos, written materials, reflective activities, and study time.

Most of our students dedicate 1-2 hours per week to study around work and other commitments. You will have a full 12 months of access from the date of enrolment.

Activities & Assignments

During your course, you’ll complete various hands-on activities where you can put your new skills into practice.

Knowledge Checks. After each lesson, you’ll complete a Knowledge Check—a short quiz that assesses your understanding of the key concepts presented in the lesson.
Activity: Animal Care Guide: This practical activity will deepen your understanding of the various aspects of caring for a specific pet animal. This task aims to help you develop essential research skills while reflecting on the complexities and responsibilities associated with animal care. By creating a comprehensive care guide for your chosen animal, you will explore key topics such as nutrition, common diseases, animal behaviour, and enrichment techniques, ultimately promoting responsible pet ownership and a greater appreciation for the diverse needs of our animal companions.
Activity: Planning Your Future in Animal Care: In this activity, you will reflect on your personal interests, strengths, and goals to develop a preliminary career plan for the animal care industry. This exercise will empower you to make informed decisions about your future and foster a greater sense of purpose and passion for your chosen profession.
Activity: Supporting Animal Welfare: In this activity, you’ll reflect on your dedication to animal welfare and sustainability and set a tangible goal for making a positive impact through simple, daily actions.
